Employees smash World Run goals in aid of spinal cord injury research
Team Hexagon Metrology contributes to fundraising of over €4.2 million for Wings for Life charity18 May 2015
On 3 May, Hexagon Metrology personnel from around the world joined forces with over one-hundred thousand other entrants at the Wings for Life World Run. This unique event took place simultaneously in 35 locations worldwide, with Hexagon Metrology representatives joining the field in several countries.
Attracting everyone from elite athletes to running novices, the Wings for Life World Run is known as the only race where the finish line chases the runners. Every participant is challenged to run as far as they can before the pursuing ‘Catcher Car’ overtakes them to signal the end of their race. 100% of the entry fees are donated to the Wings for Life charity, an international not-for-profit spinal cord injury research foundation, and Hexagon Metrology has made an additional donation of €50 for every employee who ran.
“Wings for Life is doing some amazing work to find a cure for spinal cord injury, and our teams have definitely embraced this cause and run with it!” said Anne Willimann, Director of Global Marketing Communications at Hexagon Metrology. “Where I took part, in Olten, Switzerland, the weather was absolutely terrible, but it really didn’t matter. It was wonderful to see everyone come together and challenge themselves for charity.”
Early estimates showed that participants globally ran a combined total of over a million kilometres, raising more than €4.2 million for Wings for Life with donations still coming in. The overall men’s race was won by Lemawork Ketema, who ran 79.9 km in St Polten, Austria, while the women’s race winner, Yuko Watanabe, completed 56.33 km in Takashima, Japan.
Mustapha El bouchouafi, General Manager at Hexagon Metrology Germany, who ran an impressive 20.74 km at the event in Darmstadt, Germany, added “The Wings for Life World Run seemed like a completely different kind of race, so when the opportunity came up to run with my colleagues as part of Team Hexagon Metrology, I jumped at the chance. We might not have kept up with the elite runners, but the whole day was such good fun, everyone was supporting each other and I would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking of taking part next year!”
