XDelivering accuracy, precision and traceability in the medical technology industry for when lives depend on it
Investment in quality excellence has been a powerful motor behind the success of Paragon Medical. So, when Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division developed HxGN SFx | Asset Management software to monitor and analyse how key assets are performing via a centralised, user-friendly dashboard, Paragon Medical was keen to deploy it for its coordinate measuring machines (CMMs).
A contractor to the medical industry suddenly saw its order for Intensive Care ventilator components leap from 4,000 a week to over 18,000. And that increase in production looks like continuing into early 2021.
As the world moves ever closer to being able to distribute an effective vaccine against COVID-19, a leading supplier to the pharmaceutical industry is manufacturing packaging components and delivery systems ready to support the vaccine, once it’s readily available.
Founded in 1927 to produce aluminum splints— cutting edge at the time—Zimmer Biomet is a medical device company commanding second place in the entire world’s overall orthopedic market share. The organization’s stated purpose is to “Restore mobility, alleviate pain, and improve the quality of life for patients around the world.” For at least one Zimmer Biomet quality engineer, the nature of the company’s products and what it takes to manufacture them takes on a decidedlysensitive tone.
A Waterford sheet metal specialist used RADAN software to prototype and manufacture emergency medical waste bins for the Irish health service in the fight against COVID-19.
A free evaluation licence from ALPHACAM meant that a manufacturer could put a machine tool that hadn’t been fully commissioned and was standing idle during the Coronavirus crisis, to work producing essential PPE for front line health workers.
Expanding its suite of VISI software has enabled a medical components specialist to increase its capacity by up to 40 per cent, dedicating that additional production to manufacturing parts to fight COVID-19.

Wide, flat countryside, gigantic wind turbines, bright redbrick houses – so characteristic of the far north of Germany. To industry experts however, the region is also associated with the manufacture of tablet presses. Fette, based in Schwarzenbek, Schleswig-Holstein, has years of experience as a master of this art.
Precision is our passion. Such is the company‘s claim. That is obvious when taken on a tour of the company. Kaizen charts everywhere. A spotlessly clean production hall. Shiny machining centres representing the state-of-the-art, as far as the eye can see. „At Hitega we work in a field of absolute precision,“ says Managing Director Michael Herre.
The unmistakable style of its halftimbered houses, mills, wines, and smoked ham. These are but a few of the best known traditions of the Black Forest, Germany’s “green lung” between the Rhine and Danube rivers that borders on France and Switzerland. Yet, there is another less known tradition here in this south-western part of Germany: accuracy. Already in the 18th century, the famous “Black Forest Clocks” were sold throughout Europe and all the way to Turkey. Clocks and parts, springs and gramophones – technical products that have been replaced by electronics today, but which did give to the now renewed industrial enterprises a sense for measuring and precision.
On entering the Liffey Park Technology Campus in Leixlip, County Kildare we stand less than one mile away from the original (circa 1759) brewing location for the most famous of Irish exports – GUINNESS.
