Sunday 8 May saw Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence employees around the world join over 150,000 athletes in completing the Wings for Life World Run. This unique charity race took place simultaneously in 34 official international locations across six continents.

The World Run is unlike any other race, as novices and elite athletes alike are chased down by a mobile finish line in the form of the event’s “Catcher Cars”. The runners in each location must simply run as far as they can before they are overtaken, allowing the event to cater to competitors of all levels and ensure anyone can have a run at raising funds for a great charity.

Every entry fee collected is 100 percent donated to the charity Wings for Life, an international not-for-profit spinal cord injury research foundation. Employees who participated raised additional funds for Wings for Life through sponsorship, and Hexagon has again pledged an additional donation for every employee that participated.

“We’re so inspired by the amazing work Wings for Life supports. Bringing our people together to challenge themselves and make a contribution to this wonderful cause has become one of the highlights of our year,” said Anne Willimann, Director of Global Marketing Communications at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. “We had runners fighting the cold in Canada while their colleagues battled sunburn in the UK – the World Run is a truly global event that’s perfect for bringing people together in a global company like ours.”

This year, participants across 12 time zones ran a combined distance of over 1.25 million kilometres, and raised a current total of €6.6 million – over 50 percent more than was raised by the 2015 event. Runners faced temperatures from as high as 42ºC in Ahmedabad, India, to as low as 5.6ºC in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Emily O’Dea, Applications Manager with Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence in the US, ran an impressive 19.36 km in the cold at Niagara Falls, where 750 runners began their World Run at 7am. She praised the “stunning scenery, glorious weather and enthusiastic crowd”, but for Emily and so many others, the day was really about the opportunity to support such a great cause. She added, “The whole event really makes you appreciate the fact that you can participate, when so many out there cannot due to spinal cord injuries. I'm really proud to say I’m an employee of a company that supports this charity. And who would have thought running could be so much fun?"
