Short description:

We are looking for a talented control systems engineer required to complement our in-house engineering team to support the design and development of electronic control units and inverters/converters for various sectors, including specifically automotive and aerospace electrified powertrains and actuation systems.

The Control Systems Design Engineer will report to the Principal Engineer Controls Systems Development.  

Tasks in detail:
  • Supporting the Head of Electronics and Electrical Engineering in the development of new embedded control system solutions and technology
  • Delivering engineering work and taking technical leadership of aspects of our e-Powertrain projects, including activities such as:
    • Control system concept design and trade-off studies
    • 1D dynamic system modelling (plant and controller)
    • Optimising system design and control algorithm performance
    • Control algorithm code development
    • Electronic component/hardware selection/reviews
    • Schematic capture and PCB layout/routing
    • Circuit modelling (analogue and digital)
    • Managing the hardware-software interface; programming the target platform
    • Working closely with our Power Electronics and Mechanical Design engineers to develop balanced e-Powertrain solutions and closely coupled powertrain Inverters/Converters
    • Design optimisation and problem resolution for our customers products and projects (e.g. reliability, accuracy, time response, stability, efficiency, cost reduction)
    • Working closely with design engineers to create 3D geometry for electro-mechanical assessments, including environmental withstand assessment (shock, vibration, thermal, EMC)
    • Supporting the development of assembly, installation, commissioning, and maintenance manuals
    • Supporting the development of wiring harnesses, including connector, sensor and actuator selection
    • Bench testing prototypic hardware
    • Working with suppliers to specify and oversee the manufacturing (prototype and production) and testing of prototypic hardware
    • Providing input on future capability and technology development in the area of electronics and control systems
    • Supporting commercial leads to develop project proposals, including scoping and planning of control system related work packages and identification of the resources required to deliver

  • Degree, ideally PhD, in electronic engineering, control systems engineering, or related subject
  • 2+ years commercial experience in a relevant sector e.g. Automotive, Aerospace, Rail, Nuclear
  • Knowledge and application of control theory, both frequency and time domain analysis
  • Ability to use electronic system design, modelling and analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB Simulink, Altium, Proteus, SPICE etc.) for both analogue and digital circuit design.  Experience with Modelica would be an advantage
  • Knowledge and experience in using/programming microcontroller platforms
  • An understanding of motor control methodologies and application of power electronics/motor control solutions would be advantageous
  • High integrity, high reliability system design experience would be advantageous, including exposure to a Functional Safety lifecycle e.g. IEC61508, ISO26262, DO254/178 or similar
