A deeper understanding of the microscopic properties of materials is driving much of today’s innovation in the electronics industry. Engineers are now able to combine materials simulation with material test processes to determine which combination of complex materials, be it alloys, elastomers, plastics or composites, will best deliver the form and functionality they require. 

Advanced manufacturing processes then make it possible to control a material’s microscopic structure so that it functions in line with design intent. But it is not enough to use simulation tools to reduce the number of physical tests; software systems also have to be able to manage the vast amount of data about materials generated and allow it to be compared, analysed and validated. Only by capturing materials data from integrated design, production and inspection processes, can manufacturers ensure full traceability throughout a product’s lifecycle.
