We are seeking Senior Mechanical Engineers looking to expand their horizons in a dynamic consulting environment, who have experience in gearbox and/or electric drive unit design and development, to join our team and become a technical leader in our projects for global OEMs.

Our foundations are 30 years of experience as the Romax Technology design team in developing transmissions and electric drive units. Now, as part of the Hexagon family we can draw on a huge family of simulation technologies to provide services to our customers, including manufacturing simulation using Simufact, AI-driven optimisation using ODYSEE, multi-body dynamics using MSC Adams, generative design with MSC Apex GD, structural analysis with MSC Nastran, Patran and Apex, and so on. Hexagon MI’s vision is to utilise simulation technologies with its manufacturing process technologies and metrology solutions to offer a transformative package to manufacturers to break down silos between design and manufacturing.

We are seeking forward-thinking engineers who can combine their in-depth understanding of the status-quo of design and development processes, the current market of products and future trends who can identify opportunities to utilise all the Hexagon technologies and then develop world-beating electrified drive systems designs that are more power dense, efficient, and cost-effective to produce.

Some examples of our recent projects are the designing, building & testing of prototypes of commercial vehicle electric drive units and passenger car electric drive units, helicopter gearbox design, wind turbine gearbox design, writing of processes for managing NVH issues and concept design for a next generation multi-speed drive unit.

Responsibilities in this role will include
  • Contributing to and technically leading projects or work package in
    • Drivetrain design, e.g., gearbox, electric drive unit, actuation system
    • Automotive process improvement projects
    • Troubleshooting projects (e.g., durability, vibration, efficiency failures)
  • Delivering technical work
    • Drivetrain design in Catia, e.g.
      • Gearbox components including cast housings, shafts, gears, bearings, actuation systems, mounting systems etc.
      • Motor components including shafts, housings, cooling systems etc.
      • Inverter packaging and integrating
    • Carrying out yourself or specifying and reviewing outputs of structural analysis or manufacturing process simulation to make design decisions
    • CAE using Romax software
    • Reviewing and signing-off drawings
    • Liaising with manufacturers and test houses to deal with non-conformances and development issues
    • Specification of supplier parts and technically overseeing suppliers for delivery of prototype parts.
    • Design of hydraulic or electric shifting mechanisms
    • Writing requirements documents and test requirements
    • Process reviews at our customers to seek areas where the simulation technology can add value to customers’ design or manufacturing processes
  • Discussions with customers in meetings and web-meetings
    • Supporting sales teams to understand customer needs
    • Writing proposals for project work
    • Project delivery
You will have
  • An excellent understanding of the design and manufacturing processes for transmissions or similar complex mechanical components
  • A passion for elegant design with feel for the impact of design decisions on manufacturing, maintenance, assembly, performance, and aesthetics.
  • A simulation driven approach – even if not necessarily to do simulation yourself, o be able to ask the right questions to ensure useful and accurate simulation results
  • A sound knowledge of manufacturing for mechanical components such that you can sign-off drawings of transmission components and liaise with manufacturers
  • 5+ years’ experience in a related area
  • Relevant qualifications – e.g., mechanical engineering degree
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in developing skills in Hexagon’s software other CAE tools
  • A willingness to be ‘hands-on when necessary
  • A willingness for occasional international travel for customer / supplier visits
The role is based in Nottingham, UK. Hybrid working requests would be considered, we prefer people to work at least 3 days per week in the office.
