What is your name and position within Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence?
Hi there! My name is Shaun Wissner and I am one of a handful of Marketing and Communications Specialists for Hexagon Software, mainly focused on PC-DMIS and DataPage+.
How did you get into this line of work?
I started in metrology in 1998 at a small die casting company in Muskegon, MI as the primary inspector for their production facility. My background in computer aided drafting and design helped facilitate this career choice. From there I was hired in October 2000 by Brown & Sharpe as an Applications Engineer and the rest is history.
What does your day to day look like at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence? Describe a day in the life.
Working from home has its perks and pitfalls. On one hand I enjoy zero commute time, while on the other it’s hard to separate work from life sometimes. Generally, I ease into my work day very early with email and global communications over coffee, then move into scheduled planning and organizing meetings with various software Product Owners. The Product Owner is the member of the team responsible for defining and prioritizing the Team Backlog so as to streamline the execution of program priorities, while maintaining conceptual and technical integrity of the features or components the team is responsible for…hopefully more on them later. The afternoon is generally consumed with projects and tasks coming from the morning meetings where I try my best to shut down before 6pm with no peeking until the next morning. Work/Life balance is very important to me and I’m thankful to work for a company that supports this value as well.
What are your future goals?
To be quite honest I don’t really have any future goals other than to stay healthy and try to continually improve myself both physically and mentally, maybe learn a new language or two, and keep vigilant about environmental friendliness. Other than that I am quite happy with my work and supervision, of course there will always be things I would like to see improved or efficiencies taken at work but these things take time. It’s important to remember and from time to time take stock in all of the great things we do for the world as Hexagon employees.
What do you see for the future of PC-DMIS?
Point Cloud inspection will continue to grow as laser and white light technologies advance but overall I see PC-DMIS sort of deconstructing, becoming more application specific. This idea works very well with smart phones and connected technologies so I think we will maybe see a modularization of our inspection software. Maybe even a Software as a Service (SaaS) option where our customers can rent certain tools for a day or month for special projects. And moving away from hardware licensing, via port locks, into soft licensing, via LMS, is surely a first step to this possibility.
What do most people not know about PC-DMIS?
Probably how few developers we have continually fixing and improving the software versus how many devices PC-DMIS controls. As of January 2016 we have less than 150 people developing new tools and testing current technology with seemingly countless CMM controller protocols, probe head configurations, and multiple arm setups. Then we throw CNC control, laser trackers, vision systems, and any new technology that we invent and it seems amazing that these people get to sleep at all.
What do you do for fun outside of working at Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence? Hobbies?
I mostly enjoy spending time with interesting people, old friends or complete strangers, who like craft beer (or spirits) and local eateries, who avoid inane chit chat and meaningless conversation. I also have a VW bus camper with a pop top and will pretty much go anywhere near water or festival, especially beer festivals…
What is something that most people don’t know about you?
I believe that some of the greatest relationships a person will ever have in their life start and end in the same night.
